Got a Kid? Get Going in Fountain Hills, Arizona

If you’ve got a kid, Fountain Hills, Arizona, is a fun place to visit. First is Denny’s for breakfast. Their new Smiley Alien Pancakes should bring a grin to your munchkin’s face. A fluffy pancake is topped with two dollops of cherries for eyes and a whipped cream smile. Bacon strips form the antennae of this little alien and each is crowned with a silver dollar sized pancake. While you’re waiting for breakfast, you and your kid companion can color and wear the creature from outer space masks.

Next stop is the Dollar Store in the Target shopping center on Shea. For probably less than $10.00 you can fill up a basket with water toys, art supplies, dolls, action figures and lots more. Your child will be entertained for hours, which means you get a bit of a break.

What’s a visit to Fountain Hills without a stop at the world famous Fountain. While you’re waiting for the fountain to do its thing, walk around the entire lake. Ducks and other waterfowl make the lake their home, as well as lots of colorful Carp, as in fish. Make sure you bring a blanket and you can put some of those Dollar Store toys to work at the park.

Blow off more steam and get a Happy Meal at McDonalds, at the corner of Shea and Saguaro Blvd. The playground adjacent to the restaurant allows your little one to climb ladders, slide through tunnels or just wade through the balls, all safe and sound.

Fountain Hills is fortunate to have a great library at 12901 E. La Montana, with a spacious and fun filled children’s area. Even if there isn’t an activity scheduled, there are books galore: picture books, chapter books, animal books. Take your tyke on a tour of France, introduce them to weird insects, or prehistoric monsters. Explore the Egyptian ruins or the far reaches of the Alaskan tundra. It’s all there at the library just waiting for you.

The River of Time Museum is right next to the library and while there is a minimal admission fee it’s well worth it. Study the area’s geology, fauna and flora. Wonder at the Mountain Spirit Dancers Exhibit and think about what life must have been like for the early Indians. Arizona is famous for mining, cowboys and the cavalry, you can visit the Dixie Mine, the P-Bar Ranch, and the Ft McDowell’s army post exhibits to get a glimpse of our historic past.

Time for a snack and back to the lake for ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery, 12645 N. Saguaro Blvd. The possibilities are endless, creamy smooth ice cream mixed with your choice of nuts, fruits, candy, or cookie crumbles, served in a crunchy waffle cone. Fountains Hills, KFHX 1620, one and only radio station is located in the same shopping strip,12645 E. Saguaro Blvd. You can see the radio hosts and their guests live through the large windows, and hear them. After a brief tour of window shopping, walk over to the playground on the South side of the lake. Your child can show off their jungle gym skills and impress you with their ability on the swings.

By this time both you and your kiddo should be happy, tired, and ready to head on home.
